here's a story about china forbidding int. tourists to tibet indef.:

so benji promises to share his lame experience in tibet in the year 2000.... (some other time, soon)... i still remember looking at mount everest for the first time ever... on august 17 2000 there in tibet, from the tibetan side (not from nepal) --- it was, co-incidentally my sister's birthday who had passed away a little more than a year before that....... actually maybe i'll try to transcribe some of those moments right now.... sun's come up a moment ago and benji's ripe for bedtime.... having knocked out 2 shifts already this week

(gwen stefani - hella good)

that's right, my crazy lively sister raquel, who was a character but that didn't mean she had character (to quote pulp fiction) was indeed born on august 17, 1969 (69 very appropriately for raquel).... she was really quite a character and maybe i'll delve into that more some other time.... raquel suicided on may 23rd 1999 which was terribly sad, but i respect the fact that hanging herself must have taken a shitload of guts, i mean if you're gonna kill yourself, popping a cap in your brain is too easy.... or popping pills....... hanging yourself is some really old school way to do it, we don't approve, but it just seems gutsier than suicide pill.....  a year after her passing, and the whole time being a staunch believer in reincarnation, like the tibetans, i didn't particularly find it surprising to see everest up close and personal for the first time on raquel's birthday...... on the way to llasa we visited the city of shigatse which is the seat of the punchen lama........ we rode in a convoy of 3 four wheel drives from kathmandu... i rode with two spaniards and our tibetan guide plus the driver.......... in llasa there was a notable fight between two tibetan women on the street one time (spent 2 weeks in llasa + trip in and out another week)....... what comes to mind now is the stooped, bent backs of the old tibetan women, who seem to age prematurely, and their wrinkled, but sunburnt skin...... later will have to remember more for you.... but now it's off to sleep land

we recall our travel buddy in llasa was a young english woman, possibly a little older than benji, who was 24 at the time..... since starting his trip to spain a few weeks beforehand, benji had begun to drink exceedingly heavily, perhaps in order to acclimatize to the future reality in catholic spain.... also smoking alot of pot too.... however, almost a year prior to starting this trip at the end of july 2000, benji did not partake in booze and pot, being a shut-in hermit for about 10 months..........

the young english woman was the daughter of some kind of english diplomat and had a level head on her shoulders..... there was also a german couple at our hotel which was pretty much right in downtown llasa, the german girl was memorable for her good looks and the fact she could actually speak tibetan and was on a longer journey into tibet than the most of us..... at one point the german girl busted out some hash and we started smoking that too......... another time i was so hopelessly drunk eating yak burger with some american guy called mike who had been living in japan and was boasting how he could hold a typical japanese woman up in 'one hand'  (that's how tiny they were)......... at some point at the yakburger hotel restaurant with mike around, i had to run outside mid-meal to throw up due to general effects of drunken-ness

anyway, there must have been a helluva lot of relatively sober time to tell you about there, and probably my english travel buddy and my spanish travel buddies never knew how drunk i was.... i remember arriving to madrid later and just drinking about 2 or 3 litres of wine a day straight for weeks as soon as getting there...... starting in the daytime, sometimes with help from my buddies there......... my homeboy in spain arranged a bank xfer to me to tibet and he said his homey at the bank was blown away by that.........

regardless of how much booze was consumed in on this trip, we're gonna get you some good details from tibet....... right down to the little details in the thanka drapes of the monasteries......... with the english girl, checking out some monasteries, a tibetan monk came up to us and i was snarfing on some fried chicken so i just gave it to the monk for a joke and he ate it........ that struck me coz they're meant to be vegetarians.... my english buddy said he was just obliging me coz i insisted but i didn't buy it at the time

oh and btw, the very hard-working raquel really paid for this trip with her hard work coz it was actually paid for with money from her 401k pension fund account........ thanks raquel! and smoke less pot in your next life-time buddy!
